Manufacturer: Celon Laboratories Ltd. Country of origin: India.
Product Introduction
ALKACEL 5 mg Tablet is a prescription anticancer medicine containing melphalan. It is primarily used to treat certain types of cancer, including multiple myeloma and advanced ovarian cancer. It belongs to a group of medicines known as alkylating agents and works by damaging the DNA of cancer cells, thereby preventing their growth and multiplication.
Take melphalan 5 mg Tablet exactly as prescribed by your doctor and follow a consistent dosing schedule. It should generally be taken on an empty stomach, usually at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after food, as food may affect its absorption. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water and do not crush, chew, or break it. Maintain adequate hydration during treatment as advised by your doctor.
Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, and decreased production of blood cells. Since melphalan can suppress bone marrow function, it may reduce the number of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets, increasing the risk of infection, anemia, and bleeding. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop fever, sore throat, unusual bleeding, bruising, or other signs of infection.
Before starting treatment, inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, reduced bone marrow function, a weakened immune system, or a history of severe allergic reactions to melphalan or similar medicines. Tell your doctor about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, supplements, and vaccines you are using, as some may interact with this medicine.
melphalan 5 mg Tablet can cause serious harm to an unborn baby and is generally not recommended during pregnancy. Effective contraception should be used during treatment as advised by your doctor. Breastfeeding should be avoided during treatment unless specifically approved by your healthcare provider. Older adults may require closer monitoring during therapy.
Melphalan Tablet is available in two dose : (1) 2 mg (2) 5 mg.
Uses of melphalan Tablet
• Multiple myeloma: Helps control multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow, by slowing or stopping the growth of abnormal cells.
• Advanced ovarian cancer: May be used to treat advanced ovarian cancer in selected patients, particularly when other treatment options are unsuitable or as directed by the treating oncologist.
Benefits of melphalan Tablet
Multiple Myeloma: melphalan Tablet helps control the growth and multiplication of abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow. By reducing the number of cancerous cells, it may help control disease progression and reduce complications associated with multiple myeloma.
Advanced Ovarian Cancer: This medicine may help slow the growth and spread of ovarian cancer cells and may reduce tumor burden in appropriately selected patients.
Convenient Oral Treatment: As an oral medicine, melphalan Tablet can be taken according to your doctor's instructions without requiring intravenous administration, although regular medical monitoring and blood tests are still essential during treatment.
Side Effects of melphalan Tablet
Most side effects can be managed with appropriate medical care. Consult your doctor if symptoms persist, become severe, or cause concern.
Common side effects include:
• Decreased production of blood cells
• Nausea
• Vomiting
Because melphalan can significantly suppress bone marrow function, regular blood tests are usually required to monitor blood cell counts.
How melphalan Tablet Works
Melphalan Tablet contains melphalan, an alkylating agent. It works by forming chemical bonds with the DNA of cancer cells, causing DNA damage and interfering with the cell's ability to divide and multiply. Cancer cells are particularly vulnerable to this effect because they generally divide more rapidly than normal cells. This ultimately causes the death of abnormal cancer cells and helps slow the progression of the disease.
