Description:
Radiopaque
Properties: Palacos R is radiopaque, which means it can be seen
on X-rays. This is important because it allows surgeons to visualize and assess
the placement and integrity of the cement post-surgery.
Composition:
Palacos R is a type of polymethyl
methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement. This is a synthetic material
that hardens and bonds to the bone and implant, providing strong support.
Usage:
It’s commonly used during primary and
revision hip arthroplasties (hip replacements) and for securing
other orthopedic implants in place. It's designed to provide a secure and
durable bond between the bone and the implant.
Centrifugal
Mixing: Palacos R is often mixed in a special machine to ensure
the cement is evenly mixed and has the right viscosity, which helps prevent air
bubbles and ensures a good bond.
Improved Flow
and Handling: The "R" in Palacos R refers to a
modification in the formulation that enhances the flow and handling
characteristics, which helps it to be applied more efficiently during surgery.
Antibiotic-Loaded
Variants: There are also antibiotic-loaded versions of Palacos
(like Palacos R+G, which contains gentamicin) to help
prevent infection during and after the surgical procedure.
